For every cosplayer out there, there are dozens of people who would love to cosplay but there’s something stopping them. It might be some external barrier, like money, or time. It could be a perceived lack of skill or creativity. Or maybe some fool has convinced them that because of their height, or ethnicity, or weight they can’t get involved.
I’m going to be taking a look at some of the more popular reasons people cite for being unable to cosplay, and seeing if there’s a way round them. Whether that’s pointing out a resource or technique that isn’t so obvious, dispelling some myths, or offering encouragement to the shy and uncertain. I’ll also point out where the excuses are genuine reasons that can’t be solved with a wave of my magic wand!
At the moment I’m looking to cover the following, but if there’s something I’ve missed, let me know in the comments, and I’ll include it in a future article.
I Can’t Cosplay Because…
- It’s too expensive
- I don’t have the time
- I’m too tall/short/fat/thin/old/young
- I’m the wrong ethnic group
- I don’t have the skills
- My parents say it’s a waste of time/money
- I’m too embarrassed
