NEW BLOGGER! ~ Stubbled Grapes

Hello! Let’s get the basics out of the way first. My name’s Katie, though I tend to go by Stubbled Grapes online. My first cosplay was 6 years ago, but I’ve only been cosplaying with any seriousness for the last 3 years. I’m about to graduate from university with a degree in astrophysics (see, now you can tell your friends that you know an astrophysicist). And, well, I guess that’s me in a nutshell.
So, cosplay. That’s what you’re here for right? You may be young, you may be old. You may be a veteran, you may be a newbie. But that doesn’t matter, because I think cosplay brings us all together, from all walks of life, into one big nerdy mass of people in costumes. Because at the end of the day, that’s what we are.
My enjoyment of cosplay comes primarily from making them. I’m much better at sewing than prop making or other pieces, but I like to put my hand to anything, and I always like to try something new (if, of course, I can afford it). The joy of forming a costume, and being able to say “yes, this looks just like *insert character here*” it what makes cosplay worth it to me. I like to try to make things are accurate as possible (in terms of how they look), so I can often be found staring at a picture for hours trying to work out just how that top folds or how that belt attaches to everything else. Of course, sometimes you have to take liberties, or rather, use your own initiative since we’re turning drawings into real life things here.
And then the best bit. The highlight. (Though without the making I personally wouldn’t find this bit as enjoyable).
Wearing costumes with your friends, taking photos and having a laugh. Because that’s what it’s all about in the end, isn’t it, having fun. Always remind yourself of why you’re cosplaying and you’ll stay with it for many years to come.
And it doesn’t matter if you make your cosplays, or if you buy them from someone else. Whether you’re attending you’re first convention or you’ve been at conventions since the dawn of time. Like I said, at the end of the day, we’re all a big bunch of nerds, dressing up in weird and wonderful costumes, having fun. And don’t forget it. =]
